Popular Destinations During Golden Week

Golden Week starts on April 29th in Japan. It is a succession of four national holidays within a week. With the schedule this year, if you take paid time off and combine it with weekends, you could have an 11-day holiday. Golden Week is a very popular time to travel. Popular foreign destinations during this season are Seoul (Korea), Honolulu (Hawaii), Guam, Bali (Indonesia), Taipei (Taiwan) and so on. Since Japan is an island country, you always have to fly or take boats to go aboard. In fact, the Japanese word for "foreign countries/abroad" is "kaigai," which is written with a combination of the kanji characters for "ocean (kai)" and "outside (gai)". I still feel a little strange when traveling to different countries by car or other land travel.
