A Story From My Childhood
Since the Japanese school year starts in April, it is the month of new beginnings. I like the feeling when everything starts afresh. When I was in a elementary school, I always liked getting new textbooks on the first day. I liked the study of the Japanese language (kokugo) the best. I used to read all the stories in the textbook in one sitting. A few years ago I had an opportunity to teach grade three students (Japanese children living abroad). When I looked in the textbook, I was surprised and happy to see the one of the stories that I read many years ago. The title is "Tsuribashi Watare (Crossing the Suspension Bridge)". I found that the story is available online and I think it would be great practice for you to read it. If you haven’t mastered kanji yet, "Hirahira no hiragana megane" is a very useful site that displays furigana above the kanji. I hope you enjoy reading it.

子供のころに読んだ話
日本の学期は４月に始まるので、４月は新学期にあたります。私は何もかもが新しく始まるような気がするこの季節が好きです。小学校のとき、第一日目に新しい教科書をもらうことを、私はいつも楽しみにしていました。私の一番好きな科目は国語でした。教科書をもらったとたんに、のっている話をみんないっぺんに読んだものでした。何年か前、小学校三年生の子供たち（海外に住んでいる日本の子供たちです）を教える機会がありました。教科書の中に、私が何年も前に読んだ話がのっているのを見つけて、驚いたと同時にうれしくなりました。｢つり橋わたれ｣という話です。この話はインターネットで読むことができるので、みなさんにも良い読みの練習になると思います。もし漢字にまだなじみがなければ、｢ひらひらのひらがなめがね｣は漢字のうえに振り仮名をつけてくれる、とても便利なサイトです。楽しんで読んでくれるといいなと思います。

Nihon no gakki wa shigatsu ni hajimaru node, shigatsu wa shingakki ni atarimasu. Watashi wa nanimokamo ga atarashiku hajimaru youna ki ga suru kono kisetsu ga suki desu. Shougakkou no toki, daiichinichime ni atarashii kyoukasho o moraru koto o, watashi wa itsumo tanoshimini shite imashita. Watashi no ichiban sukina kamoku wa kokugo deshita. Kyoukasho o moratta totan ni, notteiru hanashi o minna ippenni yonda mono deshita. Nannen ka mae, shougakkou sannensei no kodomotachi (kaigai ni sunde iru nihon no kodomotachi desu) o oshieru kikai ga arimashita. Kyoukasho no naka ni, watashi ga nannen mo mae ni yonda hanashi ga notteiru no o mitsukete, odoroita to douji ni ureshiku narimashita. "Tsuribashi Watare" to iu hanashi desu. Kono hanashi wa intaanetto de yomu koto ga dekiru node, minasan nimo yoi yomi no renshuu ni naru to omoimasu. Moshi kanji ni mada najimi ga nakereba, "Hirahirano hiragana megane" wa kanji no ue ni furigana o tsukete kureru, totemo benrina saito desu. Tanoshinde yonde kureru to ii na to omoimasu.
