There is a city called "Obama" in Fukui Prefecture. "Obama" is written with a combination of kanji character for "little" and "beach." It is a former fishing village and well known for hand-painted lacquer ware (wakasa-nuri). Obama's success in the US presidential race has brought welcome publicity to the city. It has been featured numerous times in domestic and international media, and the number of visitors has increased 20 percent.The city has received various gifts for Obama to congratulate his presidential inauguration, but unfortunately the city doesn't have a way to present them to him at the moment.

日本の福井県に、小浜という名前の市があります。"小さい"の"小"と、"浜"と二つの漢字をあわせて小浜(おばま)と読みます。昔は漁村でしたが、現在は職人が手仕事で仕上げる若狭塗りの漆器で知られています。アメリカ大統領選挙でのオバマ氏の活躍は、小浜市にありがたい注目を集めました。国内、国外のメディアに何度も取り上げられ、観光客の数は20パーセントも増えたそうです。大統領就任のお祝いとして、小浜市には数々の贈答品が寄せられていますが、今のところオバマ氏に届ける手だではなく、対応に困っているとのことです。
