The constitution of Japan guarantees equality of the sexes before the law. Even though the percentage of girls continuing from junior high school to senior high school surpasses that of boys, a woman wishing to function at the same level as a man in the business world is severely handicapped. Most women work for a few years after graduation, then get married and become housewives. The majority quit work just before marriage or the birth of their first child.
Due to limitations under the current social environment, the only roles that women can perform, other than occupational roles that only a woman can fulfill is teaching. Approximately 57% of all elementary school teachers are women, and it is one of very few professions available where a woman can fully exercise her abilities.
On the up side, recent trends have open up greater opportunities for women than ever before. One can now find more female judges, administrative and executive officers and school principles than ever before. Thought the numbers are still small, it is a definite improvement.
A married woman's daily routine is that of housewife. She will assume all responsibilities for household affairs. Prior to W.W. II, it was not unusual for middle class families to employ a maid to help with household duties. The pay for maids was low, and the work was hard, but this was considered the best way for a country girl to learn social etiquette before marrying.
As the post W.W. II economy improved, and a labor shortage was created, the average house could no longer afford the services of maids. Modern trends finds the employment of a maid only when the woman of the house is ill and help is essential.
Now the average housewife is responsible for all of the chores. Though, with the advent of washing machines, vacuum cleaners, automatic rice cookers and other modern conveniences the burden has become somewhat lighter. Raising children still remains the hardest work, but by the time the children enter school much more free time is available to the housewife to pursue social activities and other interests. Some women are even able to find some part time work to help with the family income.
