Kanji Rule (8): A Combination of Pictures

Pictures turned into kanji. A combination of pictures also became kanji. 

  • Meaning
    firefly

  • Reading
    On-reading: kei
    Kun-reading: hotaru 

  • Mnemonics
    A firefly emits light from the back part of the body. However, in the old days it was thought to be the head that emitted light. The top part of the character expresses the light. The bottom part expresses an insect.
