Kanji Rule (7): The Chinese Invented Kanji

The Chinese made kanji characters by observing their culture. If you look at the kanji, you can see the lifestyle of the Chinese.

  • Meaning
    disaster

  • Reading
    On-reading: sai
    Kun-reading: wazawa(i) 

  • Mnemonics
    In China, a flood or a big fire were the worst disasters. The top part of the character expresses a river. The river can cause a flood. The bottom part is fire.
