Kanji Rule (7): The Chinese Invented Kanji

The Chinese made kanji characters by observing their culture. If you look at the kanji, you can see the lifestyle of the Chinese.

  • Meaning
    elder brother

  • Reading
    On-reading: kei, kyou
    Kun-reading: ani 

  • Mnemonics
    In China, boys are thought to be superior. The elder brother has the most seniority among the boys in a family. The elder brother tells many things to his younger brothers and sisters. The top part of this character represents a mouth and the bottom part represents legs.
