  Momotaro

Momotaro (Peach Boy) is one of the best-known Japanese folk tales (Mukashi-banashi). Mukashi-banashi are usually richly layered stories based on fictional characters and events. They typically begin with a phrase like "Mukashi mukashi, aru tokoro ni (Long, long ago, in a certain place)." The characters often include ojiisan (an old man) and obaasan (an old woman), or a man or boy with a common name like Taro.

The tale of Momotaro is about a heroic boy born form a peach. In the old days, the peach was a symbol of long life and was also believed to be effective in warding off devils. Click here to read the "Momotaro" story. Okayama Prefecture is famous for being the home of Momotaro.
