  Natto

Natto are fermented soybeans, a food particular to Japan. The soybeans are cooked and wrapped in a pipe made from straw, then left to ferment. They are very sticky and have a strong smell.

The Japanese often eat natto for breakfast. It is usually mixed with a raw egg, soy sauce and some mustard. Some people put the mixture on top of a bowl of hot rice. It is rich with vitamins, fiber and protein. Natto dates back 1,000 years and it became popular in the Edo period. It is more popular in the eastern part of Japan.
