Question of the Week
Vol.
42

Q. I saw a different writing style for the hiragana "ki" and "sa" on your site. Are they both correct?

A. Yes, they are both correct. It is just different style of writing. Let's compare them.

Computer fonts are usually the style on the right. Here are some hiragana charts using computer fonts.

When handwriting, people tend to write with the style on the left. At calligraphy class, teachers usually teach this style as well. However, it is just personal preference and you can use whichever is easier for you.

"The Japanese Writing Tutor" site shows you how brush strokes work. It will help you to understand why there are two different writings. Click the links of the character "ki" and "sa" on this page.

There are also slightly different styles for the hiragana "fu" and "yu."
