(2) When your order hasn't come for a long time, you can ask a waiter or a waitress with these phrases.
"Deshou" can be used as "probably". Since it is derived from "desu" and more indirect, it is used when asking a question more politely. Compare these sentences.
The waiter or waitress might answer with these expressions.
"Moushiwake gozaimasen (申し訳ございません)" is a very polite expression for apologizing. As I mentioned before, employees in the service industries are extremely formal and polite in Japan. "Moushiwake arimasen (申し訳ありません)" or "Sumimasen (すみません)" also can be used, though "Gomennasai (ごめんなさい)" is not appropriate in this situation. Click here to learn more about apologizing. |
