Kanji of the Week

Kanji Rule (5): Circles Became Squares.

Pictures are turned into kanji, but there are no circles used in kanji. Therefore circles became squares. Curved lines also became straight lines.

  • Meaning
    sun

  • Reading
    On-reading: nichi
    Kun-reading: hi, ka

  • Mnemonics
The sun is round. The circle became a square in kanji. There is a sunspot in the middle of sun. This black dot became a straight line, too.
