Word of the Day: Negau

By December 20, 2012

Follow me on:

Today's word is "negau (to wish; to desire; to hope; to beg; to implore)". It is written with a combination of the kanji character for "wish" and the hiragana "u." "Negau" is a verb and the noun form is "negai." "Negaigoto" is another noun to describe, "wish." The song "When you wish upon a star" translates into, "Hoshi ni negai o (星に願いを)" in Japanese. I love that song. The lyrics and melody are beautiful. Here is part of the lyrics in both English and Japanese.

When you wish upon a star 星に願いをかけるなら

Makes no difference who you are 君がどんな人かなんて関係ない

Anything your heart desires 心から願うことは

Will come to you かなうんだよ

When you wish upon a star, your dream comes true 星に願えば 夢は実現するんだよ
