Halloween in Japan

By , About.com GuideOctober 27, 2010

Follow me on:

The Japanese has adopted many Western customs (Christmas, Valentine's Day etc.). Since Halloween was not widely known when I was little, I didn't have any Halloween experiences in my childhood. I liked wearing fancy dresses, just like many other girls, and I would have enjoyed the opportunities to dress up as a princess very much. Halloween is becoming more popular nowadays, probably more for commercial reasons. You see many Halloween candies and chocolates sold at stores. Halloween special events are promoted at Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan (in Osaka). Unfortunately, I don't think many people have a chance to make Jack-O-Lanterns (kabocha-chouchin), because the big orange pumpkins in North America are not commonly grown in Japan.

The same is happening in Italy, 20 years ago Halloween was only on tv, now it is everywhere! The commercial-reason explanation is the most suited, i think.

I love watching J-horror movies! My favorite is Audition. Have you seen it?

“Japan has adopted” or “The Japanese have adopted”, what you have written “The Japanese has adopted” is not correct.

I live in Guatemala and halloween is becoming popular. Now parents leaves their children to go out and ask for candies. I don’t like the idea.

Nice blog, i’m learning a lot hehehehehe
