Obama City in Japan

By , About.com Guide   January 21, 2009

Follow me on:

There is a city called "Obama" in Fukui Prefecture. "Obama" is written with a combination of kanji character for "little" and "beach." It is a former fishing village and well known for hand-painted lacquer ware (wakasa-nuri). Obama's success in the US presidential race has brought welcome publicity to the city. It has been featured numerous times in domestic and international media, and the number of visitors has increased 20 percent. The city has received various gifts for Obama to congratulate his presidential inauguration, but unfortunately the city doesn't have a way to present them to him at the moment. Japanese translation

Please leave the ethnocentric bigotry out. The comment “Only in Japan” shows you have no understanding about human behavior. People are people wherever you go.

i gave Gaijin the benefit of the doubt, thinking he was being ironic. if he was being sincere, then he should change his name to Baka Gaijin.

It’s GAI-KOKU-JIN , not GAI-JIN. Gaijin is a BÛJOKU (insult !).

What a Coincidence…

What if the Next US President were named Osaka ? :)

I’ve seen the Obama City from the link above, I think it’s a nice near shore city… I hope there’s a lot of fish there :)
