Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

Wednesday August 6, 2008
If you are an anime fan, you’ve probably heard of Hayao Miyazaki. He is a great director of animated movies. All his work is amazing, but "Spirited Away" is my favorite. His highly awaited new film, "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (Gake no ue no Ponyo)" was released in Japan a few weeks ago. The film is inspired by "The Little Mermaid" and tells the story of a fish-girl, Ponyo, saved by a five-year-old boy, Sousuke. It is done completely with traditional hand-drawn animation, not using any computer graphics. I am really looking forward to seeing this film. It is supposed to be a simple story for young children, which means you will probably understand it even in Japanese! I hope you are able to enjoy the film with sub-titles when it comes to your country. Japanese translation

I already watch it in Japan during my vacation and have little time and visit Ghibli museum. indeed! is very easy to understand without English sub, besides english sun won’t release until next year. The movie is awesome and Miyazaki tried to make this movie that even a 5 years old kid can can understand it. Long live Ghibli.

I really like the way you explain yourself. I found your page several years ago, and often read you (I didn’t started to learn japanese till a month ago). And I must say it’s the best and clearest site to learn japanese I’ve ever found. I see a lot of work here, and a very fun method to learn. I needed to say it. Thank you very much for all your work.

I am really looking forward to Miyazaki’s newest movie. It’s an interesting idea to watch a movie in Japanese without subtitles to see how much you could understand. (and then watch it again and enjoy it fully subtitled :D ) I will try it whenever Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is released in the U.S. :D
I do wish that they would release Miyazaki’s movies with both English and Japanese subtitles though.

Thanks so much for the Japanese lessons. Because of your online lessons, I can actually read hiragana and katakana. It’s so much fun to have my kids come to me and ask for me to read their Japanese Yugioh cards out loud to them.

Because Miyazaki san is famous, his animes

are well known.

Are there other animes made by Japanese

directors other than Miyazaki san that

you like to recommend?
